Safety Around Heavy Equipment Operations

According to data from the OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration / U.S. Dept of Labor) – 17.5% of workplace fatalities in private industry during 2011 were from the Construction industry. Safety is paramount in any industry, but is especially important in construction – and should be a top priority for everyone from management to employee. In addition to hazards such as falls or electrocution due to site related hazards; danger levels increase exponentially when heavy equipment operation is a part of the mix.  Although nowhere near an exhaustive list – here are some important safety tips to remember when working with heavy equipment.

Wear the right gear: Visibility clothing, safety glasses, a hard hat and steel-toed footwear – these items are a must and the more visible you are – the better. Even completing seemingly minor tasks without proper eyewear doesn’t seem like a big deal until you have an accident that results in irreparable eye damage.

Inspect your Machines Frequently: Before starting a machine to run it – walk around the machine and do a visual inspection for damage, loose components and any other potential hazards. Make a habit to also inspect any equipment after use to account for any fresh damage or changes that occurred during the last usage session.

Follow Proper Start Up & Shut Down Procedure: With any machine – only start the engine when seated properly in the seat and the immediate area is clear of hazards, workers and any other obstructions. When turning off your machine after use – ensure every time that any attachments have been lowered and the brakes are fully engaged.

Communicate: The more machines working on your site – the higher the potential for accidents. With multiple machines running – it can be impossible to hear shouting. Use established hand signals or ensure that there are Walkie-Talkies available when it becomes too loud to shout back and forth.

Read the Instructions: Do not exceed load capacities for machinery. Do not try and use a piece of equipment for a task that it is not safely designed for. Manuals have operating guidelines for a reason – it is not ever worth the gamble to go against what your machine manufacturer has specified.
